Convent

Historical landmark
The earliest records mentioning the Convent, date back to the 14th century, it was subsidized and built by the Ricci family, the same as Fra Tommaso, a Sandonatese friar in the odor of sanctity, who is still venerated and studied today.

The Convent was dedicated to the Most Holy Conception. With the bull "Instaurandae regularis disciplinae," Pope Innocent X, in 1652 ordered its closure and only two years later it was reopened and granted to the Carmelites of the Mantua Congregation.

Inside the structure, lived six monks, four laymen and two priests, who devoted themselves to religious activities, crafts and agricultural work. They had a property covering about five hundred hectares of land, which they delimited through the construction of boundary walls, which are still visible in the vicinity of Via Chiaie.

In the summer of 1878, Princess Anne Caroline Bonaparte also stayed there, at the invitation of Quintino Fabrizio, a medical examiner who was well known in the Kingdom of Naples.

Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Anthony

In 1870 the church was dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Anthony. Following restoration after the 1984 earthquake, two frescoes were found: the first, painted after 1654, depicts the apparition of Our Lady to St. Simon Stock and three other Carme- litan saints; the second depicts a miracle of St. Anthony and was painted by an anonymous 18th-century artist. The erudite citations, perspective, and anatomical studies, both of the corpse and of the craftsman from behind, hark back to late 16th-century models of the Michelangelo school.

On the inside, the church has a cross-vaulted cloister with partially plugged arches.

From the same century is the oval dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The work is the result of the 18th-century arrangement of the apse.
