The story of Vincenzo Piselli: A hero of San Donato Val di Comino

One of the most moving and meaningful stories from our village concerns Vincenzo Piselli, a brave man whose life and sacrifice deserve to be remembered.

Born June 22, 1910, in San Donato Val di Comino, Vincenzo Piselli, affectionately called "Pasquale" in honor of his grandfather, was a kind and hardworking man. He worked as a blacksmith and tinsmith together with his close friend Nazzareno Cedrone, with whom he shared a craft store on Cathedral Street. In addition to their work in the workshop, they helped with the daily maintenance of the Mother Church.

The arrest and
deportation

In 1944, during World War II, Vincenzo Piselli was arrested by the Nazi-Fascists while eating dinner at home. Along with him, two or three Sicilian military fugitives were also arrested. Taken to the Casa del Fascio and then to Alvito, Vincenzo's family hoped for a release that never happened.

According to accounts, Vincenzo had brought food to British soldiers hiding in the mountains of San Marcello and Vorga. This act of bravery, at the behest of Abbot Donato Di Bona, was discovered by the Germans thanks to a denunciation.

The tragic end
in Dachau

Deported to Dachau, Vincenzo Piselli died on March 7, 1945, aged only 34. His death was caused by exhaustion and torture. Despite the terrible circumstances, his memory is still alive thanks to the testimonies collected and the acts of heroism that marked his short life.

The stories of those who knew him paint a poignant picture of Vincenzo and the context in which he lived. Sister-in-law Cesidia Leone recalls his arrest and the vain hopes for his release. Clelia Mazzola recounts how the abbot discreetly helped those in need. Federico Cedrone describes the tragic day of the aerial machine gunning, followed by Vincenzo's arrest.

The memory of Vincenzo Piselli is celebrated with affection and gratitude by the community of San Donato Val di Comino. His sacrifice and that of many others during the war are remembered for the courage and dedication shown in times of great difficulty.
