March 16, 1914 marks a historic turning point for transportation in the Comino Valley. On this date, automobile service was inaugurated between Cassino and Sora, passing through Atina, San Donato Val di Comino and Alvito, thanks to the Società Anonima "Sacsa." This event revolutionized connections in the region, making travel more comfortable and faster, overcoming the use of the old horse-drawn carriages.
A journey
memorable
The car service, with cars built by Sauer House in Switzerland, was celebrated with a ceremony involving many local dignitaries. Departure was from Cassino train station, with destination Atina for the official inauguration. The route, rich in history and striking scenery, included stops in San Donato Val di Comino and Alvito, with festive welcomes at each stop.
During the journey, passengers were able to admire the famous Cassino Abbey and the vast surrounding plain. In Atina, a historic town mentioned by Silio Italico, the welcome was warm, with flags and music, and the cars were blessed by the local clergy. San Donato Val di Comino also offered a special welcome, with music, refreshments and a visit to the memorial plaque of a local hero.
Innovation and
progress
The new automobile line was a significant innovation at the time, promoted by young local entrepreneurs such as Cav. Vincenzo Mazzenga and Engineer Alfredo Visocchi. The service facilitated travel in the "fertile district of upper Campania," connecting important towns and promoting the region's economic and social development.
Today, visiting San Donato Val di Comino and walking the same roads opened in 1914 offers a unique experience, rich in history and natural beauty. The Comino Valley, with its breathtaking landscapes and historic towns, is an ideal destination for history and culture enthusiasts.
Did you know That...
The route between Cassino and Sora crosses the striking "Sferracavalli road," so called because, according to tradition, horses lost their shoes because of the rough terrain? This road, built in 1824 with the cooperation of local municipalities, is a fascinating example of community engineering and hard work that you can drive along today comfortably, enjoying breathtaking views and breathing in history.
